ABOUT MICHAEL

Michael Gary Walsh, M.D., brings a truly unique skill set to understanding human beings at the intersection of mental health and Christian spirituality. He is a board-certified psychiatrist and practicing physician in private practice. He earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he was elected to the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Honor Society. Later, he completed his psychiatric residency at the University of South Dakota, where he served as chief resident.

Dr. Walsh is also a graduate of Denver Seminary, where he obtained a master’s degree in Christian Formation and Soul Care. He currently serves as adjunct faculty at Denver Seminary, and has published peer-reviewed original research in both psychiatry and spiritual formation. Additionally, he is a sought-after speaker on a variety of topics at the interface of Christian spirituality and mental health.

Where a psychiatrist with seminary training is a rare combination, a psychiatrist with formal training in spiritual formation is truly unique, positioning him well to address matters of human behavior and Christian spirituality from a fresh new lens. Michael met Dallas Willard during his time in seminary and over the last decade he has become an avid student of Willard’s work, focusing his unique clinical and seminary perspective on Willard’s philosophy as to better understand how people change for the better. Michael co-hosts Inside the Cup Podcast with his wife Holly, meets with individuals as a spiritual director, and provides discipleship training for churches and groups.

Michael and his wife Holly live in small-town Iowa with their five children.
